adidas Event

Wandered into an adidas store event on Broadway after a nice catch up brunch with some old faces on Sunday. It was up on the 2nd level with lots of health&wellness info booths, snacks, drinks, and even bootcamp workout gym instructors! Stuck around for 20 minutes and took home a nice stringybag of goodies that are now sitting in my fridge. Or in my stomach. Or with Mr. Hankey by now!

Did you ever notice that adidas is not capitalized on purpose?

Eastville Comedy Club

Snagged front row side seats at the intimate (also aka small) EastVille Comedy Club to see a few sets on stage. You can usually score free tickets anyway by emailing them your name/timeslot at eastvillecomedy@yahoo.com, but I would go 30 minutes early to beat the line. Judah Friedlander did a great quick set – super random, weird and clever. And Helen Hong was so cute!

OVO

Been seeing a lot of TV commercials about OVO so I got myself some tix and trekked up and over to Randall's Island to the big top for the 8pm show! Masks n umbrellas and million dollar popcorn and lemonade stands with wines.

Totally not supposed to take pics once inside the show arena, but this was the giant glowing egg we saw once we stepped in! And a giant spiderweb net when we got back to our seats from intermission :) so cool. PS: the big top space was intimate enough to where if you sit in the last row you can still see all the awesome action with no problems.

And then I snuck a blurry pic of the grand finale with confetti blossoms and giant plant/flower figures and human buglet crawlies. The only other Cirque du Soleil-related shows that I saw in the past were Corteo and La Vie (even though that was more Spiegelworld-stamped), but OVO's storyflow and creativity with the costumes was like no other! And the use of stage space and the variety of acrobatic performances was just WOW. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but they pretty much utilized the full big top tent to the maximum with the trapezes, rope and sky setups, rock wall play, orchestra bands, and even small tiny touches like firefly glows and audience involvement. I would definitely see it again but with better seats towards the middle next time :D just amazing! I can't decide what was my favorite part but I definitely like the grasshopper costumes and the burly cockaroach trapeze mens ;P

Trekking Tip of the Day: The site says to take the X80 bus over at 125th Station, but it only takes pay-per-ride metrocards, not the unlimited ride ones that I use. So we got off and stuck with the M35 instead – it gets there just the same, just trust googlemaps! And they didn't check stubs or tickets on the way back to Manhattan, so it's a free ride after the show on the X80.

Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters

Took a stroll over to Japan Society after work to check out the Graphic Heroes, Magic Monsters exhibition of Japanese prints by Utagawa Kuniyoshi. I didn't have my camera on hand to keep me company, so I shall steal some shots off their site ... which they stole from other sites! The exhibition goes on through June 13th – drop on by if you're nearby on free admission Fridays 6-9pm.

And whoops didn't know I was supposed to pay to see a film in the theater! I was just coming out of the basement bathrooms and wandered in the theater :P no one checked stubs though. I saw the middle/ending of Seisaku's Wife (清作の妻
).

Random fact time: Today was the first time I've ever seen a pool table without pockets before at a pool hall! That my friends, is actually called a "Coin Billiard Table." You only play wit three balls – one is yours and the other is your opponent's. I was gonna look up how to play but then realized I am nowhere near the level where I can even understand what "three-cushion billiards" mean. But yup, pretty cool looking haha.
